Donegal hosts Hiking Europe

Donegal played host last week to European Partners from Spain, Italy, Germany, Croatia and Austria for the third Hiking Europe Project Steering Committee meeting and training session.  The first day of the meeting was held in the beautiful setting of Glenveagh Castle with day two of the proceedings taking place in the Silver Tassie Hotel in Letterkenny.

The Hiking Europe Project aims to promote rural hiking routes across four European countries, namely Ireland (Donegal), Spain (Catalonia), Italy (Emilia- Romagna) and Croatia (Dubrovnik-Neretva).  The goal is to offer visitors a wide range of walking trails where hikers can experience local traditions, taste local cuisines, visit shops and museums or discover the local fauna, flora and hidden landscapes.

Donegal County Council is delighted to be associated with the Hiking Europe Project and is working in collaboration with local stakeholders to promote the Bealach na Gaeltachta (the Gaeltacht Way).  The Bealach na Gaeltachta comprises of four circular long-distance trails in West Donegal namely Slí an Earagail, Slí na Rossan, Slí na Finne and Slí Cholmcille plus the smaller walks in the three islands (Arranmore, Tory, & Gola).

Cathaoirleach Cllr Terence Slowey welcomed the Project Partners to Donegal and noted that although the European Union is currently going through a stage of unrest, we as a Partnership must appreciate the working relationship we have established and hope that the forthcoming years will provide ample opportunities for the implementation of additional projects that bring many social and economic benefits to us all.

The Hiking Europe Project is supported by the Competitiveness of Enterprises and Small and Medium-sized Enterprises programme (COSME) of the European Commission.  Further information on the Project can be obtained at www.hikingeurope.net
